Evaluators:
Please keep in mind that this list of evaluators is provided as a service to the homeschool community and is not an endorsement of the evaluators listed. My personal recommendation is that you communicate with other homeschoolers and ask about their evaluators. Then contact the evaluators and ask what they do during an evaluation as well as the time frame for you to actually receive the evaluation letter (you are on a deadline, after all). Homeschooling styles range from unschooling to traditional school environments. Evaluators, and their expectations, follow a similar pattern.
Here are some links that provide advice on choosing an evaluator:
www.mdhsa-pa.org/Home-Schooling/Homeschooling-in-Pennsylvania.php
http://phea.net/HomeEdEvaluations.html#perspectivesoneval
If you are evaluating for the first time, you may want to schedule an evaluation very soon. That can give you time to have a second evaluation, if necessary, before the June 30th deadline.

Thanks to everyone who replied to the request for evaluator names!  If you would like to add an evaluator to the list, please email me: homeschoolers@pmbfc.org

The three main homeschool diploma programs maintain a list of their own certified evaluators. Here are the links for them:

The following are evaluators whose names were given to me by members of our own local homeschool group, or who have contacted me directly to offer their services:

Judy Swartley: 570-629-6730
I have been doing evaluations in the Pocono area for several years. My name
is Judy Swartley and I have graduated my daughter through home schooling. I
am a PA certified Art teacher for K-12th grade and understand what is
required for home education. If you are interested in an evaluation of your
students school year, you can call me at 570-629-6730 to set your appointment.
I live in Swiftwater by Sanofi Labs.

Patti Mahaney: 570-424-0358
I am a Christian homeschool mom who has also taught part-time for a local school district. My husband says I am and always will be a teacher. I have taught for 25 years in some form and have settled contently into the world of homeschooling. I homeschool my teenage son but also have the privilege of teaching other students who are homeschooling. I love getting to know the young people of today. I also get to know their parents through my homeschool consulting business and my workshops. When not teaching I love to read, do needle work, watch the METS and travel with my family. I hope as I become a little more tech savvy this site will be a blessing to some and a reminder to me of all that God has blessed me with in my life.

Tim Anger: 610.965.4790 and ask for mailbox 227, evening: 484-347-3600  (cell)tanger@lveval.org
Tim Anger lives in Emmaus, and evaluated middle and high school homeschoolers in the Poconos for several years. Unfortunately, we no longer have enough homeschoolers to warrant him making the trip up here. If several of you are interested in using him as an evaluator, he may once again come to the Poconos for evaluations. Here is a link to his website:

I am a piano teacher with the Lehigh Valley, Pennsylvania & National Music Teacher's Associations.  I have a Master's Degree in Education and have played piano nearly all of my life.  The lessons are taught in a relaxed setting in my home.  I teach most students from the Faber & Faber Lesson, Theory & Performance Methods.  When the student reaches the point of being able to read music, then the student is "required" to work out of a "fun" book of their choice (with approval from the parents) in addition to their other lesson work.  Discounted rates for siblings are available.
I currently teach private piano lessons to several students who are schooled at home; who would be able to provide you with any reference information you would be interested in.

I send out monthly emails filled with upcoming scheduled activities and fun events open to Agora families in the area as well as non-Agora homeschoolers.

Just to let you know a little bit about myself, I am a Chef/Caterer and homeschooling mom with 3 daughters, two of which are students and the 3rd is 3 years old. I have my own Catering business that I just launched, but is still a work in progress. My business is called "Niolli" Gourmet Catering & Desserts (www.niolli.vpweb.com) and only cater on-premise for events usually on the weekends. In the evenings I am a cook for a local restaurant. I have been cooking for 10 years and love working with kids.
Sign your kids up today for fun & educational cooking classes that they will love!!

scheduled class. Thank you.

Book Club:
The Barrett Paradise Library is offering a new Book Club and Reading Program with age-appropriate discussions and activities facilitated by a certified teacher.  Created with homeschoolers in mind, it's only once a month, so it shouldn't put a strain on an already busy homeschool schedule.  Best of all, it's FREE!  There will be plenty of great books and activities for pre-readers to young critics.  R.S.V.P. to Barrett Library at 595-7171.  Come join us and bring a friend or two!

Writing Opportunities:
Aletheia is a quarterly writing magazine for creative young Christians, ages 13
to 17.
Our mission is to provide readers with quality fiction stories, along with poems, that uniquely unveil or glimpse Christian truths in mysterious, beautiful, or wondrous ways, and to allow young writers, artists, and photographers the opportunity to fulfill this provision through submissions.
Most story genres or types will be considered, including but not limited to: allegory, fantasy, fable, nature, and inspirational. The Christian life is a journey. Show us your creativity!
What we're not looking for: Non-fiction (poems are an exception), sentimentalism, apologetics, legalism, preachiness, plainness, recreations of biblical stories or events.

In today's society there is a ton of material we read and see.  So much of it however, is not compatible with or supportive of a Christian worldview.
Aletheia wants to nurture young writers and artists to use their gifts to create work that will inspire, strengthen, enlighten, cause wonder, and satisfy readers with creative work that is compatible with or supportive of a Christian worldview.
